Beautifully rich in color, expressive of a lifestyle, surf music has been around since the 60′s. In Jackson Mississippi, surf music just got original. Buddy & The Squids are riding the wave of – make that making waves with their self-titled debut EP that features groovy tunes influenced by metal, jazz and the ocean.

Buddy & The Squids is an instrumental surf band formed in 2011 by drummer Daniel Guaqueta, guitarist Brent Varner, and bassist Tyler Baker. The trio concocted the idea in between church services one day at First Baptist Church in Madison.

Midtown is Blank Canvas for Development, Weekend’s Figment

Everyone’s an artist, at least this weekend in Midtown. Figment returns for a third year to Jackson and its second year in the Millsaps Arts District just south of Fondren. In 2012, Midtown hosted this small, family-friendly, interactive festival building on the momentum of 2011′s inaugural event at the Coca-Cola plant on Highway 80. Figment began in July 2007 on Governors Island in New York Harbor with over 2,600 participants.

Pablo Picasso is quoted as saying “Every child is born an artist, the problem is to remain one once they grow up.” It seems the influential 20th century painter has also had influence on Scott Allen, a Fondren artist who never gave up on a passion that’s been growing since he was a child.

Allen’s dad was a collector long before cable networks began calling his kind a “picker.” As a kid, Allen says his dad’s fondness for hand-painted porcelain signs helped to foster his own love of logos and lettering.

Asian-inspired M!SO opens Friday on Duling Avenue next to Fischer Galleries in Fondren. In the 2,000 square-foot noodle bar-style restaurant, diners will find counter-casual service, a full bar managed by John Swanson (formerly with The Library) and a six burner wok.

Hairstylist Denise Hewitt has opened a new business on Mitchell Avenue in Fondren. Pritzy Katz Salon and Kids Conisgnment Shop specializes in like-new clothing for infants to juniors. Prices begin at $2 and shoppers can find brands like Mud Pie and Ralph Lauren. Some of these outfits normally retail for $30, and when we visited, we found pieces priced at $10.

The shop will sort through and keep only resalable items. Items that don’t fit that criteria go to Matt’s House in Midtown, a shelter for women and children. Consigners get 40% of the sale
