Murdered JSU security officer identified | News
JACKSON, MS (WLBT)- A group of officers joined Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart Saturday morning, to examine a body found in the grass at the corner of West Capitol and Kolb Streets some time before 8am.
The body has been identified as 27-year-old Jackson State University Security Officer Joseph Welch. The coroner's preliminary examination reveals five bullet wounds to the body.
Jackson police say Welch had failed to show up for work at 10 p.m. Friday night.
"We got a shots fired call early this morning around 1:45 in this area," says Jackson Police Spokeswoman Colendula Green.
Nothing was found at that time. But nearby residents spotted the body when the sun came up, and called police again.
Officers arrived, but it appears a full hour went by before robbery homicide detectives showed up. After hearing about the murder, the WLBT Newsroom placed the first call to a photographer at 7:48 a.m. During the next hour, an officer was heard on the scanner asking the whereabouts of robbery homicide. Then our newsroom staff sent a text message at 8:52 a.m. asking, "Did robbery homicide just show up?" The response was "Yes".
We told Officer Green about the time lapse.
Meanwhile, those living in the area where the murder occurred are on edge. Keith Robinson has young cousins to tend to.
"Keep your eye on your kids, loved ones, family because you don't know what people do out and around here," he says.
