Jackson native wins Marine of the Year award | News
A Jackson native was recently honored as the 2nd Marine Division’s Marine of the Year.
Sgt. Jeremy Butler, a Provine High School graduate, was honored at the 9th Annual Marine Corps Association & Foundation Ground Awards Dinner in Arlington, Virginia, according to the Marine Corps Association & Foundation.
The dinner recognizes the four Marine Divisions’ Marines of the Years, the recipients of the 2011 Leftwich Trophy, Hulbert Trophy, Zembiec Trophy, the Chambers Award and the MARSOC NCO/Critical Skills Operator of the Year, according to the foundation.
Butler served as an Infantry Squad Leader in combat in Marjah, Afghanistan. He earned the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with a Combat Distinguishing Device, according to the foundation.
On another deployment, Butler received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his gallantry.
