JACKSON, MS (WLBT)- A Jackson couple is behind bars, facing a number of drug charges and a child endangerment.

Shermedrick Day, 28, and his girlfriend Charity Barton, 26, are charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

Investigators say that charge is enhanced because a gun was found with the marijuana and within 1,500 feet of a church.

A four year-old child was in the house at the time of the bust.

That child is now in the custody of the Department of Human Services.

Hinds County and Madison police narcotics agents teamed up to bust the Jackson couple after receiving a tip.

Sheriff Tyrone Lewis considers the bust at the 2513 West Capitol Street home a significant find.

Authorities wouldn't say how the Jackson drug bust connected the two agencies.

An AK-47, a pistol, along with half a of a pound of marijuana and more than $14,000 were seized in the bust.

"In a joint operation like this, when a you receive a large amount of cash or money, it is normally split and will be split between the two agencies that worked the particular case. So, we are very proud and pleased with the partnership," explains Lewis.

"It was information that pertained to both jurisdictions. So it behooved all of us to work together. Which is another example of what we're trying to do in the metro area, is agencies working together," says Madison Police Chief Gene Waldrop.

Day and Barton remain in the Hinds County Detention Center.
